Jean R. Markert, 101, of Hamburg, and a resident of Heritage Mills Center in Tower City, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2025.
Jean was born on March 13, 1924, to the late Clifton and Florence Martin. She attended school in Girardville, Pa, and was a member of the former methodist church in Girardville.
She previously worked as an LPN for the Hamburg Nursing Home and also as a clerk in the Philadelphia court system. She was a member of the Hamburg Moose Lodge, and she always enjoyed taking trips to the casinos in Atlantic City.
Besides her parents, Jean was preceded by her first husband, SSgt. Thomas Potts who was killed in action during World War II at the Battle of the Bulge and was a Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient. She was also preceded by husbands the Honorable William Markert and John Burkey, a son - Thomas Burkey; a daughter - Karen Locke; 3 brothers - Thomas, William, and Frank Martin; a sister - Mae Martin; and a granddaughter - Laura Lynn Morris.
The surviving family includes a grandson - John L. Locke (US Navy) of Colorado; a stepdaughter - Joan Hilpl with Carl of Doylestown; a stepson - the Honorable William Markert Jr. with Linda of Warminster; a son-in-law - John Locke of Frackville; a daughter-in-law - Carol Burkey of Tilden Township; along with nieces and nephews.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, March 21st from 9 to 10am at the Kuhn Funeral Home, 40 S. Fourth St., Hamburg. Services will be conducted at 10am with burial immediately following in St. John’s Cemetery in Hamburg.
