Alverna K. Havrilko, 98, of Shenandoah Heights, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Providence Place Senior Living in Pottsville.
Born in Shenandoah Heights on August 20, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Verna (Deshesky) Witovich and was the last member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, she was preceded by her husband Bernard J. Havrilko in November of 2014, they were married for 67 years.
The surviving family includes her son, Ronald Havrilko of West Chester, PA, her daughter, Karen McElhattan with her husband Terry of Sinking Spring, PA, 2 step grandchildren – James with wife Helen and Jennifer, 4 step great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Alverna was a graduate of the former West Mahanoy Township High School in 1943 and McCann School of Business in 1945. She was employed by several offices in Shenandoah, including Davison’s, Sacco’s, and a building contractor. She also worked in Pottsville for the Schuylkill County Department of Public Welfare as a receptionist, switchboard operator, and clerk/typist before retiring. She and her husband, Bernie, enjoyed travels before and after retirement to Florida and many different islands in the Caribbean, but her favorite was Paradise Island in the Bahamas. She was a member of the former St. Stephen’s Church and currently the Divine Mercy Parish in Shenandoah.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, September 19th from 10 to 11am at the Oravitz Home for Funerals Inc, 40 N. Jardin St, Shenandoah. Scripture services will begin at 11am in the funeral home and will be officiated by Msgr. Ronald Bocian. Burial will immediately follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.
